Unified Conditions of Service
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is dedicated to promoting peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. UNV supports the United Nations mission by providing skilled and motivated volunteers to help achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Through their roles, UN Volunteers exemplify the spirit of volunteerism in all they do.
As of October 1, 2021, UNV introduced the Unified Conditions of Service (COS), which replaces previous versions of service conditions for both national and international UN Volunteers. These new provisions apply universally to all recruited UN Volunteers, ensuring consistency and clarity.
The following infographics outline the core provisions within the Unified Conditions of Service based on the different categories of UN Volunteers.

Conditions of Service
National UN Volunteers are provided with a living allowance to help them maintain a basic, adequate, and safe lifestyle. This allowance is tailored to the specific category of the volunteer (Community, University, Specialist, or Expert) and varies by location based on the local cost of living. However, all national UN Volunteers within the same category at a given location receive the same allowance.
To assist with initial expenses when starting their assignments, volunteers are also granted a one-time Entry Lump Sum. Additionally, national UN Volunteers who need to relocate for their roles will receive financial support for their travel.
For more detailed information, please refer to the Unified Conditions of Service available in English, French, and Spanish. Current volunteers can also access updates on changes to the UN Volunteer Conditions of Service on the Unified Volunteering Platform, published prior to the launch on October 1, 2021.
